Do you need to comply?
No but your school parents may be eligible for the Education Tax Refund.
Conditions of compliance
The Education Tax Refund (ETR) aims to help families, with children undertaking primary or secondary school studies to meet the costs of school education through assistance with certain education expenses.
If you have to comply, what do you have to do?
Under the Australian Government's ETR, eligible families will be able to claim:
- a 50 per cent refundable tax offset every year for up to $780 for each child undertaking primary school (that is, a refund of up to $390 per child, per year);
- a 50 per cent refundable tax offset every year for up to $1,1558 for each child undertaking secondary school (that is, a refund of up to $779 per child, per year).
Eligibility criteria and eligible expenses are explained on the Australian Government's Education Tax Refund website.
The refundable tax offset will apply to eligible expenses incurred from 1 July 2010. Parents cannot claim the offset in 2010, but they should start keeping records after 1 July 2010 to enable their ETR claim to be made in their 2010-2011 income tax return.
