Students with special needs

Many teachers in independent schools are trained to use teaching and learning strategies to help students experiencing learning difficulties. The students are monitored individually.

Specialist teachers and integration aides work closely with class teachers and parents assisting more than 1,300 students with disabilities attending independent schools in Victoria. Since 1995, the number of students eligible for state support services because of disabilities has increased by 250 per cent, but Australian and Victorian Government financial support for independent schools with disabled students is very limited and schools must draw on their own resources.

Some Independent Schools Victoria Member Schools cater for students with language disorders, learning difficulties, social and emotional disorders, autism and intellectual disabilities and severe to profound hearing loss.

Special programs are available for students with an above-average academic, artisitic or sporting aptitude.
