Procuring greener schools

Construction

Builders should be required to prepare and implement Environmental & Waste Management Plans for the demolition and construction works.

Other issues which could be included in the preliminaries are:

  • Establish a waste management area on site for sorting and segregating waste.
  • Records must be kept by the contractor to show how much waste was diverted from landfill.

When interviewing builders, you may include the following questions:

  • What experience do you have in constructing green buildings?
  • What issues does your site environmental management plan cover and who is responsible for implementing it?
  • How will you source and verify environmentally responsible materials?
  • What materials or items on site do you think you will not be able to re-use or recycle?
  • What training do you have for minimising and managing waste?
