Australian Government Quality Teacher Program
2007 Activities
Independent Schools Victoria together with the Victorian Department of Education & Training (DE&T and the Catholic Education Office, Victoria (CEO) have negotiated a Victorian Cross-Sectoral Strategic Plan for 2006 – 2009. Within this strategic plan and using the AGQTP grant, Independent Schools Victoria has offered a range of activities in 2007.
Our AGQTP professional learning strategy focuses on school-based teacher renewal and teacher learning teams. This strategy is strongly supported by research-based principles of effective professional learning. Schools determine their professional learning needs and, providing these fit within the AGQTP guidelines and priority areas, they can access support to meet their needs. Schools may nominate projects addressing a broad range of specific curriculum areas, targeted learning needs and/or whole-school initiatives.
Eight activities are running in 2007.
- A series of cross-sectoral forums will be held in Term 4. Teachers from all sectors will be invited to present their key learning based on their participation in AGQTP in 2007.
- School-based Professional Learning Teams lead an AGQTP project in their school.
- Schools are engaging in ICT professional learning, ranging from participation in action research projects to school-based learning.
- Schools are working with consultants to adapt either a restorative practice culture or an interactive management culture.
- New principals are exploring various dimensions of their roles in a series of residential workshops throughout the year.
- A research assistant is tracking the professional learning journey of a number of staff involved in an ASISTM project running in a number of independent schools. Her findings will be publicized to schools in late 2007.
- Teachers have the opportunity to attend a series of professional learning workshops to update aspects of their subject-specific knowledge in Physics, History, Primary Science and Drama.
- Teachers are developing their pedagogical skills through participation is a series of workshops on direct instruction and strategy instruction.
